A year ago I was driving on a dusty old road to nowhere near Winnemucca, NV. I ran across a sign indicating that the Old California Trail ran through this area. I had to learn more about the trail and the emigrants who traveled it. This book is great history for people who have an interest in pioneer travel and the by: 7.

The book is very useful for planning and also as a mile by mile guide while actually on a trail. He rates trails by difficulty and also notes his favorites for scenery.

Using those two criterion, I have planned two trips with great success. I own and have used five of his guide books - Moab, Colorado North and Central, California and Arizona/5(). Great collection of hiking trail covering the entire state of California.

This book does a great job of getting you to the trail (driving/walking directions) as well as describing what to expect once you reach the trail.

My only complaint (very minor) is that the book includes too many ultra-short trails/5(42). This book connects to California state studies standards and the NCSS/C3 Framework and features appropriately leveled text to accommodate different reading levels.

Additional features include Read and Respond and a Trail to California book activity that prompt students to dive deeper into the text for additional reading and learning.

Organized like a textbook, The California Trail walks the reader through the first ten years of the emigration, starting in Organized, but not written, like one. This is Stewart at his height, discussing events of his favorite time period, in his most accomplished form non-fiction/5.

California is so full of amazing places to hike and this book is a good push in the right direction. Trail to California book I don't always agree with the authors' choices for "best" or descriptions, but it's nice that they break the trails out into categories: waterfalls, coastal, bird-watching, views, wildflowers/5.
